Don’t get stuck with a hefty 10 percent penalty. Make sure to pay the first installment of your 2016-2017 property taxes by Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded taxpayers today.

The mobile-friendly payment system at makes it free, fast and secure to pay by electronic check – also known as e-check. On the website, you can find a helpful video that explains how to avoid the most common mistakes made while paying by e-check.

“Did you know more than half of our property taxpayers are already paying electronically?” said McAllister. “Try it out for yourself anytime, anywhere on your phone or computer.”

In September, the TTC mailed out 989,089 annual secured property tax bills. They are expected to generate $5.66 billion for the County, up from $5.37 billion last year. So far, 21 percent of taxpayers have paid the first installment of their property tax bills, and 6 percent have paid their second installment, amounting to $758 million collected.

Property taxes are due in two equal installments, the first of which is due Nov. 1 and delinquent after Dec. 12, 2016 (since this year, the regular delinquent date of Dec. 10 falls on a Saturday). The second installment is due Feb. 1 and delinquent after April 10, 2017. If taxpayers are late on their payment, a 10 percent penalty of the total amount due will automatically be added to their bill.

You can also pay over the phone or online using a credit card, though a 2.19 percent convenience fee will be charged. If you can’t pay online and have to drop off a payment in person, be prepared to wait in line. All five branches of the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office (TTC) will offer extended hours on Monday, Dec. 12, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Downtown San Diego branch is the only office that will accept cash.

Payments can be made online at, by phone at (855) 829-3773, or in person at: (1) 1600 Pacific Highway, Room 162 in San Diego; (2) 590 Third Avenue in Chula Vista; (3) 200 South Magnolia in El Cajon; (4) 9225 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. in Kearny Mesa; and (5) 141 E. Carmel Street in San Marcos.
