After Nearly 23 Years of Dedicated Service San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister to Retire

McAllister’s Retirement Effective August 2, 2025

SAN DIEGO, CA – After nearly 23 years of dedicated service, San Diego County Treasurer–Tax Collector Dan McAllister will retire on August 2, 2025. 

Elected to six terms in office, McAllister has worked since 2002 to serve the region with a focus on customer service, expanded community outreach, and the fiscal health of the County's treasury. His leadership has ensured the efficient collection of billions in property taxes, the sound and strategic management of the County’s Investment Pool, and a streamlined transition to electronic services—achieving a 99% collection rate and a significant increase in digital payments in response to the community to make payments accessible to everyone in San Diego County.

During Dan’s entire tenure, the County’s Investment Pool earned the highest credit rating, while maximizing returns, safeguarding principal and ensuring liquidity for Pool participants - including voluntary pool members who placed their trust in Dan and his team to safeguard their assets. Dan served the County, managing the County’s banking relationship, ensuring successful transitions for County departments with billions of dollars of transactions over the years.  Additionally, he served County employees as a member of the Board of Retirement for the San Diego County Employees Retirement Association, ensuring the adequacy of the Retirement Fund, with assets of over $19 billion. He also administered the County’s deferred compensation program, providing additional retirement options for County employees, with approximately 13,000 active employees participating.

Beyond his one-on-one mentorship of countless individuals from diverse backgrounds, Dan has also demonstrated his commitment to empowering others through education. He has led the hosting of annual symposiums focused on financial literacy training for County staff and school district employees, covering critical topics such as cash handling and fraud prevention. Through these efforts, Dan has helped foster a culture of accountability, knowledge, and professional growth across our community.

Dan’s passion for public service and dedication to community are his legacy. We congratulate Dan McAllister on his well-deserved retirement and wish him all the best in this next chapter.
