SAN DIEGO, Calif.  – Standing in front of the County's historic 1930s bank vault door, San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Larry Cohen, MBA, today officially opened "San Diego's Largest Lost & Found," kicking off the County's annual Unclaimed Monies Claim Period and encouraging residents to see if money rightfully belonging to them is waiting to be claimed.

This year's Unclaimed Monies Program includes more than $1,011,000 owed to 2,200 potential claimants, including individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations. The largest possible claim is over $27,000, and the smallest claim amount is $15. 

"Every dollar in our Unclaimed Monies Program belongs to someone," Cohen said. "Our job is to safeguard those funds until we can reunite them with their rightful owners. That's why we've transformed our historic bank vault into San Diego's Largest Lost & Found—to remind people that money they didn't even know they were missing could be waiting for them."

The Unclaimed Monies Claim Period runs from August 13 through October 11, 2026. During that time, anyone can search the list of unclaimed items and learn how to file a claim by visiting www.sdttc.com before October 11th.

"Many people are surprised to discover they have money waiting to be claimed," Cohen said. "It could belong to you, a family member, a business you own, or even an organization you're connected with. I encourage everyone to take just a few minutes to search the list. You never know what you might find."

California law requires counties to safeguard unclaimed funds for three years and to give public notice, so rightful owners have an opportunity to claim them. After the required public notice period, eligible claimants may submit documentation to verify ownership and recover their funds. Residents are encouraged to search early during the claim period and carefully follow the instructions for filing a claim.
