62K Late Property Tax Bills Still Have Time to Avoid Additional Penalties
05/19/26
Homeowners urged to pay online at sdttc.com
San Diego, CA — San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Larry Cohen, MBA, announced that this week his office will send out 62,623 notices to property owners who did not pay all their 2025-2026 property taxes and remind them there is still time to avoid additional penalties if the bills are paid by June 30th, 2026.
“If you still need to pay your property taxes, we urge you to pay online at sdttc.com – it’s the fastest and most secure way to pay. On July 1, unpaid bills will go into default and receive an additional $33 redemption fee plus penalties of 1.5% each month,” said Cohen. “That penalty adds up to 18% per year but is avoidable if payments are received by the June 30 deadline.”
The total of late taxes due is over $270 million. So far, 98.55% of first installments and 95.96% of second installments have been collected, for a total of 97.25% taxes collected so far.
“Year over year our collection rate is 99%, and we want to thank San Diegans for paying their taxes on time – it is a benefit to them and the County,” said Cohen. “There is still a small percentage of bills that are not yet paid, and this is a reminder that there is still time to avoid additional penalties.”
Property taxes are due in two installments. The first date is in December and the second is in April. Each late installment has already incurred a 10% penalty, plus a $10 fee if the second installment is late. Taxpayers can quickly and easily pay their bills online at sdttc.com at no additional cost if payment is made using the free e-check option.
The possibility of increased penalties is not the only incentive to pay unpaid taxes by June 30th, 2026. Under California State law, properties that have been in default for five years may be sold at a tax sale.
