Five Months In: Treasurer Delivers Early Results

San Diego County Treasurer Larry Cohen highlights achievements of office, including financial gains and industry accolades
San Diego, CA — Larry Cohen, MBA, San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector, today highlighted key achievements during his first five months in office, underscoring a commitment to sound financial stewardship, transparency, and operational excellence on behalf of county residents and public agencies.
“Over the past five months, our focus has been on delivering strong financial results while strengthening the systems and processes that support this important work,” said Cohen. “Since being in this role, it has been my commitment to uphold, support and improve upon the systems and team members that make our Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office one of the best performing in California.”
“I am pleased to report that this commitment to excellence has been underscored by high interest earnings, industry distinctions, and consistently high collection rates,” continued Cohen.
Recent accomplishments of the County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office include:
- New Mail Processing Center Opened: In April, the office opened their new mail processing center, an updated facility that can handle 7,500 payments an hour and enhances efficiency, improves security, and streamlines tax payments.
- $141 Million in Net Interest Earnings (last quarter of 2025) – The County Investment Pool realized $141 million dollars in net interest earnings, with an annualized yield of 3.86%, exceeding national inflation.
- $151 Million in Net Interest Earnings (first quarter of 2026): The Investment Pool realized $151 million dollars in net interest earnings, with an annualized yield of 3.84%.
- Fitch Rating’s ‘AAAf’/‘S1’ distinction – For the 27th consecutive year, the office earned a AAAf’/‘S1’ rating, one of the highest distinctions for a public investment pool or local government investment program, signaling exceptional credit and very strong liquidity.
- GFOA’s “Excellence in Financial Reporting” Distinction - For the 28th consecutive year, the office earned the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
“In addition to these achievements, our recent property tax sale was successful and brought in an additional $9,721,400 for the County, we are on our way to reaching our annual 99% tax collection rate, and we have broadened the ways we are communicating with our audience, like launching a bimonthly newsletter to keep San Diegans apprised of key dates and deadlines,” said Cohen.
Looking ahead, the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office will continue to build on this momentum, prioritizing innovation, transparency, and responsible financial management to support the long-term fiscal health of San Diego County.
